COMMUNITY NOTICE: Volunteer Service Event – Wiggins Mill Park Seedling Flagging

Date Posted: Monday, March 25th, 2024

Volunteer brewing is seeking volunteers to assist with flagging of young tree seedlings planted as part of the reforestation at the New Castle County Wiggins Mill Park and Natural Area.

Wiggins Mill Natural Area is a 193 Acre property owned by New Castle County that has been dedicated as Delaware’s newest natural area. The Wiggins Mill property includes a 70-acre unique old growth riparian forest that provides critical ecological function to the adjacent natural areas, is a water resource protection area, and includes high quality state and federal wetland areas, and has a large area in agricultural use that will gradually be reforested.
Last year, approximately 11,000 tree seedlings were planted on 15 acres of the property. We hope to mark the seedlings with flags to allow mowing between tree rows to control invasive plants until the trees get a few feet tall.
The event will also give you the chance to visit the 193 acre open space area and recently dedicated natural area that New Castle County is planning to open up to the public for passive recreation with several miles of nature trails.

• Appropriate clothing and hats that can get dirty and are suited to the weather (cold, rain, wind, or heat);

• Water and Snacks.
