Emergency Sirens Test on Tuesday, April 2nd, 2024 @ 7:20 p.m.
SMYRNA, Del. — The Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) and Delaware State Police, along with Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. (PSEG), will conduct a quarterly test of the Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations Alert and Notification system on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at 7:20 p.m.
There are 37 sirens in Delaware located within a 10-mile radius of the Salem-Hope Creek Generating Stations in New Jersey. The sirens cover an area north from Delaware City, west to Middletown, and south to Woodland Beach. This test is part of an ongoing program that continually monitors the integrity of the siren system. Sirens will be activated for three to five minutes, followed by a test message of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) on local radio stations. Sirens tested are the same ones used to alert the public in the event of an actual emergency at either the Salem or Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations.
In the event of an actual emergency, there would be a series of steady three (3) to five (5) minute siren sounds that would alert citizens to turn their radio to an Emergency Alert System (EAS) station for critical emergency information or instructions.
To check whether you live within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone, or EPZ, go to de.gov/epz.

The Town of Townsend Celebrates the First Day of Spring & Women’s History Month
In 2022 Town Council passed Resolution 2022-006 to recognize Women’s History Month. To further recognize Women’s history this year the Town is highlighting the several Councilwomen who have served dating only back to 2006.
- Sherene “Sherry” G. Drake – Served from 2006 – 2008; although a Resolution was not found for Councilwoman Drake you may find a resolution signed “HERE” by herself and other Councilpersons who showed their support of Mary A. Rohweder, the 2006 National Miss Delaware Junior Teen Queen
- Sandra J. Sturgis – Served from 2006 – 2012
- Karen Jennings – Served from 2007 – 2013
- Lorraine Gorman – Served from 2013 – 2019
- Eschalla Clarke – Served from 2021 – 2023
- Sheryl Rojas – Served from 2022 – 2023
We encourage you to click on each of the Councilwomen’s names to see the resolutions passed in their recognition to get a glimpse of their dedication to serving the Town. During their time these women, along with their fellow Councilmen, passed several ordinances and resolutions to engage and bring awareness to the community. For example, the Town’s original Light Ordinance was introduced in 2011 as part of the energy and environment initiative with the National Wildlife Federation. In the same year, Townsend was awarded a conservation award from the DE Nature Society in April of 2011 for becoming the first certified Community Wildlife Habitat in Delaware.
The Town continues to partner with the National Wildlife Federation by maintaining our certification. One of the requirements is for the Mayor to sign the “Mayors Monarch Pledge“. This pledge encourages our community and other municipalities to provide habitats for the monarch butterflies and other pollinators.
As this is the first day of Spring, the Town wanted to bring awareness to the leading women who not only set the platform for the Town’s Community Wildlife Program but also continued their efforts during their time as Council or in their volunteerism for the Town.
