ANNOUNCING: Town Council Seat Filled & Town Meeting Rules
Date Posted: Wednesday, August 21st, 2024The Town of Townsend Mayor and Council appoint resident Dylan K. Wiggins to the vacant Council seat, previously filled by Councilman Joshua Mertz, at the July 10, 2024 Town Council Meeting. On Wednesday, August 7th, Mr. Wiggins was officially sworn in during Town Council meeting.
Councilman Dylan K. Wiggins is the newest member to serve the Town of Townsend as a council board member and was sworn in on August 7, 2024. Councilman Wiggins is a Philadelphia native and received his early education in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and in the Willingboro and Winslow Township, New Jersey school districts. After high school, Councilman Wiggins attended Delaware State University, where he focused his studies in Sociology with an emphasis in Criminal Justice. Upon graduating in 2004, Councilman Wiggins served as a Police Officer for the City of Newark, Delaware for approximately nine years thereafter. As an officer, Councilman Wiggins served and represented the department as a Community Policing Officer in the western area of the City of Newark. Notably, in 2009, Councilman Wiggins became the first black Detective in Newark Police Department history, following his appointment as Detective in the Criminal Investigations Division, Special Investigations Unit.
Councilman Wiggins is equipped with approximately 20 years of public service experience via law enforcement, and through partnerships with local community groups. Councilman Wiggins previously served his former local community as the President of the Bristol Place Community Association in Newark, DE for approximately ten years. Additionally, Councilman Wiggins is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives and has further maintained community and civic engagement by serving as a football and basketball coach for the YMCA of Delaware-Bear Glasgow Branch and i9Sports in Newark and Middletown, DE. Councilman Wiggins also serves as Chairman of the Deacon Board at his church in the greater Newark area.
As a current employee for the United States Department of Justice, Councilman Wiggins continues to serve not only local Delawareans, but Americans across the country. Councilman Wiggins has been married to his lovely wife Tracey for nearly sixteen years and has two children who are the central focus of his life. Councilman Wiggins is excited and humbled to continue his service on the home-front and looks forward to continuing to make the Town of Townsend, Delaware the premier place to live, grow, and thrive.
