NOTICE Declaration of Snow Emergency Due to Weather forecast and in accordance with Section 10.08.010 of the Municipal Code of the Town of Townsend, a Declaration of Emergency has been issued in the Town of Townsend at 8 PM, today, Thursday, January 6, 2022, until Friday, January 7th, 2022. Residents with even numbered addresses are directed to remove all motor vehicles that are parked on the side of any road within the corporate limits of Townsend. Parking of all vehicles on the even numbered addresses side of the street is hereby prohibited and will remain prohibited during the continuance of the snow emergency. Parking on the side of Townsend maintained streets bearing odd-numbered addresses is permitted. The Town snowplow contractor has been placed on standby to begin plowing after snow accumulations reaches 2 inches. Winter Weather Advisory Issued Until 10 AM, Friday, January 7th, 2022

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory until Friday, January 7, 2022, at 10:00AM.  The area is forecasted for snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches for central and northern Delaware.  Residents should plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute.  Slow down and use caution while traveling.  The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5-1-1.   Residents with even numbered addresses are advised to move their vehicles to their driveway or to the side of the street with odd numbered addresses. This is to allow for efficient snow removal operations.  A Declaration of Snow Emergency is expected to be issued pending the continued tracking of the storm. In addition, residents are requested to remove GFL Containers from curbside to allow snow plows to safely operate.

Snow Emergency on January 3, 2022, ending on January 4, 2022

Thank you to all that worked hard to clear the sidewalks and areas of our Town.  The Snow Emergency was issued the morning of January 3, 2022, and ended this morning, in accordance with § 10.08.010 of the Town Code.  Unfortunately, some vehicles were not moved in accordance with the order. This significantly delayed slow removal operations. Residents are reminded that failure to remove vehicles as directed in a snow emergency may result in the vehicle being towed in accordance with the Town Code, § 10.08.020 Impoundment of Vehicles Parked on Streets During Snow and Ice Emergencies. This is a reminder that residents are required to clear all sidewalks of snow and ice following a snowstorm.  Residents are also urged to not park their vehicles across the sidewalk. Emergency Sirens To Be Tested on Tuesday, January 4th, 2022 at approximately 10:45 am

A test of the Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations Alert and Notification System will be conducted by the Delaware Emergency Management Agency and the Delaware State Police on Tuesday, January 4, 2022.  The sirens should sound at approximately 10:45am. The Quarterly Siren Test involves a three-to five-minute sounding of the 37 sirens followed by a test message of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) on local radio stations.  The sirens are located within 10 miles of the Salem/Hope Creek power plants in New Jersey, and are the same sirens used to alert the public in the event of an actual emergency at either the Salem or Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations.  In such an emergency, the public would be alerted by the sirens to tune radios to one of the local EAS stations for important emergency instructions. Pending Severe Weather Conditions

Weather forecasts are reporting a Severe Winter Storm to begin overnight in our area. Current forecast is for rain turning to snow by 4 AM Monday. Snow is expected throughout the day with the potential for heavy accumulation. The Town snowplow contractor has been placed on standby. Residents are requested to remove their vehicles from roadways by 7 AM to allow for efficient snow removal operations. Townsend offices will be closed to the public. Staff will be working remotely to meet the needs of our residents.

Townsend Town Meetings to Temporarily Return to Virtual Format & Town Hall to be Closed to the Public

With substantial increases in the positivity rate and number of new positive cases in and around the Town, Town Council will be returning to a virtual meeting on January 5 at 7:30 PM. In addition, staff will be available via telephone and email and will be scheduled to assure services to our residents. Individuals who have payments or other items to drop off at Town Hall are asked to mail materials to Town Hall or use use the dropbox which will be monitored daily.   Currently, the positivity rate in our zip code is approximately four times greater than the state 7-day floating average. In addition, there have been approximately 90 new cases in our zip code over the last seven days. The floating average is approximately 13 new cases per day in our zip code.  This variant of the COVID-19 virus is showing a breakthrough rate at over 21%.  Residents […]
