    Applications for Camp Barnes will be open March 1, 2020.

    Camp Barnes is a recreational summer camp that is run and operated by the Delaware State Police.  Camp Barnes is an overnight camp that is FREE to those attend. Children between the ages of 10-13, who are residents of the State of Delaware, are eligible to apply.

    Applications for Camp Barnes will be available online or at any Delaware State Police Troop on March 1st 2020.  Applications can be downloaded at the camp’s website  www.campbarnes.net starting March 1st.  Dates for the camp and camp orientation dates will be included with the application and listed on the website.

    Some of the many activities campers participate in throughout the week include the following:

    * Swimming in an Olympic size pool

    * Kayaking in Millers Creek

    * Archery

    * Basketball

    * Soccer

    * Lacrosse

    * Arts and Crafts

    * Nature Walk

    * Fishing/Crabbing

    * Talent Show

    * Camp Olympics

     

    Camp Barnes has a staff of 16 counselors (eight male and eight female).  All Counselors are required to submit to a criminal background and are interviewed prior to being hired.  The staff also includes one on site nurse, one head cook, and one assistant cook.  A Delaware State Trooper will be on duty at all times when the camp is in session.

    Camp Barnes is NOT a boot camp or intended for youth with behavior or disciplinary problems.

    It is encouraged that all parents get an updated physical for their children as soon as possible, because spots fill up quickly.  Campers will not be assigned a week until an up-to-date physical is received.

    Town Hall will be closed on Monday, February 17, 2020 in observance of Presidents’ Day.  Trash & recycling will be picked up on Monday per the usual schedule.

    Road Work on Commerce Street

    Repair work began January 13, 2020 on the curbs and sidewalks on Commerce Street.  The project will improve our community and enhance safety.  The work will last approximately two weeks, conditional on the weather.  This work should have minimal impact on traffic in the area.

     

     

     

     

    1st Quarter 2020 Newsletter

    Councilman Patrick Miller announced at the January 8, 2020 Town Council Meeting that newsletters would be prepared quarterly.  The 1st Town Newsletter of 2020 may be found here.

    Town Hall Closed January 20, 2020 for MLK Holiday

    Town Hall will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2020 in observance of the Martin Luther King Holiday.  Trash and Recycling will be picked up Monday per the normal schedule.

    Road Construction – Karins Blvd. @ Hwy. 71

    The Town has just been advised that  CIRILLO BROS  will begin installing the sanitary sewer tie-in work on Karins Blvd. for Lifehouse Church and removing the top several inches of roadway surface on the following date:  ___ Thursday January 2nd, 2020 – weather permitting.

    UPDATE:  Installation has been rescheduled for Monday, January 6, 2020 due to predicted rain over the next few days.

    Parking and through-vehicular-traffic will be affected during this time.

    All work will be performed within the States Right-of-Way (ROW). During this time, all vehicles will need to be moved out of the limits of construction.  If vehicles are not moved by the start of construction, an employee will attempt to make contact with you.  If the attempt is unsuccessful,***The contractor reserves the right to have the vehicle towed out of the construction limits.***

    Emergency Sirens To Be Tested 1/7/20.

    Emergency Sirens To Be Tested

     

    (Smyrna) – The Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) and Delaware State Police will conduct a quarterly test of the Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations Alert and Notification system on Tuesday, January 7, 2020The sirens will sound at around 10:45 a.m.  

    The 37 sirens located within ten miles of the Salem/Hope Creek (New Jersey) plants will be activated for three to five minutes.  The siren tests will be followed by a test message of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) on local radio stations.   

    Sirens that will be tested are the same sirens used to alert the public in the event of an actual emergency at either the Salem or Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations.  In such an emergency, the public would be alerted by the sirens to tune their radios to one of the local EAS stations for important emergency instructions.
